Estimation of Mixed-Mode I/II Fracture of U-Notched Polycarbonate Specimens Using the TCD and SED Methods

Polycarbonate (PC) has diverse applications in different industries such as transportation, electronics, biomedical and solar energy sectors. is used a material for structural components that are usually complex shape subjected to severe mechanical loading. The presence of notches holes, grooves, or cuts reduces the load-carrying capacity because stress concentration. Therefore, it essential understand behavior polycarbonate notch geometries. Machining inclined at angles applied load simple, but this can produce mixed-mode I/II states exist real-life applications. present study performed on PC specimens with U-notches geometry. They differed depths, radii, angles. These were tested under quasi-static loading, selected analyzed using digital image correlation. Two linear elastic methods analyze fracture U-notched specimens: theory critical distance point method (TCD-PM) strain density equivalent concept (SED-EMC). Satisfactory estimates error between –4% 2.5% achieved TCD-PM method. Estimates derived by SED-EMC mostly within about ±13%.
